Chem. Obs. [mod. f. Gr. ἀμφί both + -GEN2, taken as = ‘producing.’] Name given by Berzelius to an element capable of forming in combination with metals, both acids and bases. He included as amphigens, or amphigen bodies, oxygen, sulphur, selenium and tellurium.
