1910. In April, 1857, Clark discovered, and brought into public notice the main or upper group of the Mariposa big trees. In the same month he built his first cabin near the crossing. It was constructed on the old frontier American plan, with the chimney outside and a roof of “shakes,” held in place by “weight-poles,” the logs unhewn and substantial in size.—N.Y. Ev.
