subs. phr. (American). The name of a political party in the State of New York, about the year 1815. [J. D. HAMMOND, The History of Political Parties in the State of New-York:, i. 450: There was an order of the Tammany Society who wore in their hats as an insignia, on certain occasions, a portion of the tail of the deer. They were a leading order, and from this circumstance the friends of [De Witt] Clinton gave those who adopted the views of the members of the Tammany Society, in relation to him, the name of BUCKTAILS; which name was eventually applied to their friends and supporters in the country. Hence, the party opposed to the administration of Mr. Clinton, were for a long time, called the BUCKTAIL PARTY.
