American clergyman, born in Andover, CT, on the 16th of October 1795. He graduated at Yale in 1815, and afterward studied in Princeton Theological Seminary. He was ordained a minister of the Congregational Church in 1819, and held pastorates in West Springfield, MA; Albany, NY; and Flushing, Long Island. He was an enthusiastic collector of autographs and historical pamphlets, and at the time of his death was in possession of over one hundred thousand autographs. He obtained possession of the papers of General Thomas Gage and presented them to Harvard Library, and published a number of works, including sermons, letters and essays. Among his publications are Letters from Europe (1828); Letters to Young Men (1845); Women of the Bible; and Timothy Dwight, in Sparks’s American Biography Series. He died in Flushing, Long Island, on the 7th of May 1876. See also “Robert Hall and John Foster.”
