English hymn-writer, born at Great Harlow, Essex, on the 22nd of February 1805; married William Bridges Adams, an inventor, in 1834; died August 1848. She wrote Vivia Perpetua, a dramatic poem (1841), and many hymns, including Nearer, My God, to Thee. See also Literary Criticism.
