American novelist, born at Brookfield, MA. Her father was a brother of Dr. Joel Hawes. She married Daniel Holmes, and resided in Versailles, KY, and Brockport, NY. Her numerous novels are of a domestic character and of a high moral tone. Some of the best known are Tempest and Sunshine (1854); Lena Rivers (1856); and Madeline (1881).
