1788. Gentl. Mag., July, 602/2. It is a custom with the Papists in some parts of the kingdom, upon the eve of All Souls, to illuminate some of their grounds, by bearing round them straw kindled into a blaze. The ceremony is called a Tinley; and the account vulgarly given of it is, that it is meant emblematically to signify the lighting of souls out of Purgatory.
1825. Hone, Every-day Bk., I. 1414. The ceremony is called a tinley, and the Romish opinion among the common people is, that it represents an emblematical lighting of souls out of purgatory.
