a. 1625. Nomenclator Navalis (Harl. MS. 2301). When the water cannot come to the well then we say that the Shipp is stoaked.
1644. Manwayring, Seamans Dict., 102. When the limber-holes, have some ballast, or any thing else got into them, so that the water cannot passe, we say the limbers are Stoaked: also when any thing is gotten in, or about the bottom of the Pump, so that it cannot draw water, we say the Pump is Stoaked. (So 1658 in Phillips; and in later Dicts.)
