[mod.L. (Humboldt, 1814), f. Gr. στεατ-, στέαρ fat + ὄρνις bird.] A bird of the species Steatornis caripensis, the type and only representative of the family Steatornithidæ; the GUACHARO or oil-bird of South America.
1818. Helen M. Williams, trans. Humboldts Trav., III. III. vii. 125. The guacharo is of the size of our fowls . I have noted it under the name of steatornis.
