Examples of the pl. spares, sparis in the 15–16th cent. probably belong to SPAR.
1688. R. Holme, Armoury, III. 100/1. Raile, is a piece of Timber, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 foot or more long,… and an inch or more thick…. Spare, is two inches thick, and four inches broad; in some places it is termed a single Quarter.
