BELIEF), the ʓe- may have been dropped already in OE.; Ormin has ‘lang o Crisstes helpe.’ The primary notion was apparently ‘equally long, corresponding in length,’ whence ‘running alongside of, parallel to, going along with, accompanying as a property or attribute’; cf.
