Gr. Antiq. Pl. lochi. [mod.L., ad. Gr. λόχος.] A division of the army, in Sparta and some other Greek states.

1832.  Arnold, Thucyd., V. lxviii. II. 339. The lochus then consisted ordinarily of 100 men, under the command of the lochagus…. On extraordinary occasions … the strength of the lochus was doubled … while the number of the lochi themselves was not increased.

1849.  W. Smith, Gk. & Rom. Antiq. (ed. 2), 483/2. The lochus here is a body of 512 men, and is commanded by a polemarch.
