S. Africa. [a. S. African Du., = Du. krans, in Kilian krants, coronet, chaplet; cf. Ger. kranz coronet, garland, circle, ring, encircling horizon of mountains, cornice.] A wall of rock encircling a mountain or summit; hence, more widely, any precipitous or overhanging wall of rocks bordering high ground or hemming in a valley.
