1882. Athenæum, 3 June, 704/1. The scroll-work upon them [Northumbrian stone crosses] is foliageous, a character which does not appear on earlier monuments.
c. 1890. J. R. Allen, Notes Monum. Wilts., 2. Foliageous terminations are introduced where the pattern has to adapt itself to the sharp angles formed by the hipped end of the stone.
