[f. FIELD sb. + PREACHING.] The practice of preaching in the open air; an instance of this.

1

1739.  Wesley, Wks. (1872), I. 185. In the evening (Wr. Whitefield being gone) I begun expounding our Lord’s Sermon on the Mount, (one pretty remarkable precedent of field-preaching, though I suppose there were churches at that time also).

2

1814.  Scott, Wav., xxxv. ‘And have you, sir,’ said the Major, ‘when the rebels are about to spread themselves through this country, actually left a great part of your command at a field-preaching!’

3

1882.  J. Taylor, The Scottish Covenanters, 72. These field-preachings, at first, were peaceable; the worshippers came to them without arms, and at the close of the services they quietly dispersed, and returned to their homes.
