Mr. Jamrach informs us that he called them cockatiels, from the name kaketieljes, applied by Dutch sailors to the first specimens brought to him (c. 1850). Dr. J. W. Muller of Leiden says kaketielje is no regularly formed Du. dim. of kaketoe, but looks like an adaptation of a Pg. dim. (? cacatilho, cacatelho) of cacatù, cockatoo. Portuguese is largely used by Dutch sailors as a kind of lingua franca in the Eastern Archipelago.]
A bird-fancier’s name for the Cockatoo Parrakeet, or Crested Grass Parrakeet of South Australia (Calopsitta or Nymphicus Novæ-Hollandiæ), common as a cage-bird in England.
