1591. Percivall, Sp. Dict., Gram., C before a o u like k if the nature of the word require any other pronunciation, it is noted with a little taile, as ç, and is called Cerilla, sounding almost as the Italian z.
a. 1646. J. Gregory, Terrest. Globe, in Posthuma (1650), 268. The Açores, or Azores, for so the çerilla will endure to bee pronounced.
1708. Kersey, Cerilla (in the Art of Printing), a Mark set under the Letter ç in French and Spanish, to shew that it is to be pronouncd as an s.
