1870. Australian Advertiser, 12 July, 3/8. The newest style is the catogan, formed of loose plaits, and tied with a large bow of black or colored ribbon.
1885. N. Y. Weekly Sun, 29 April, 3/5. To dress the hair on the top of the head and form it into a catogan loop in the nape of the neck, as ultra-fashionable women are arranging their coiffure at this moment.
