Phys. [mod. f. Gr. κατά down + ἤλεκτρον amber (see ELECTRIC) + τόνος strain, tension; cf. ANELECTROTONUS.] A state of increased irritability produced in a nerve near the negative pole of an electric current which traverses it.
1866. A. Flint, Nerv. Syst., iii. 116. Near the cathode, the excitability is increased, and this condition has been called catelectrotonus.
