Americans do not write Latin verse; and that unhappy employment, useless as it is in itself, is certainly indispensable for the true appreciation of the classical versificatory system; without it a man may learn to scan, but he can never learn to understand the music of the second Georgic or the orgiastic lilt of Catullus’s Attis.
