prefix, representing AF. vant-, aphetic f. avant- AVANT-: see VANT-BRACE, -GUARD, -WARD. In a number of compounds the t was elided, as VANBRACE, -CHASE, -COURIER, -GUARD, etc. Before labials the n by assimilation became m, as in VAMBRACE, VAMPEY, VAMPLATE, VAMWARD; and a further reduction appears in vamure VAUMURE and VAWARD. The AF. variant vaunt- is also very fully represented in English forms: see VAUNT-CHASE, -COURIER, etc.
