The name of a large island in the Indian Archipelago. Attrib. in Borneo camphor, the camphor extracted from the Dryobalanops camphora, also the tree itself; Borneo caoutchouc, a kind of india-rubber obtained from Borneo. Hence Borneene, Borneol, organic compounds chiefly obtained from the Borneo camphor tree; Bornesite a sweet volatile substance occurring in the caoutchouc of Bomeo (Watts, Dict. Chem., I. 626.)
